Schizophrenia & Schizoaffective Disorder

A Closer Look At Schizophrenia & Schizoaffective Disorder

Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders are a group of serious mental illnesses that affect how a person thinks, feels, and behaves, often making it seem like they have lost touch with reality. Schizoaffective Disorder includes these same psychotic symptoms alongside a significant mood disorder, like major depression or bipolar disorder. These conditions are complex and often misunderstood. At Oasis Mental Health Services, we provide integrated, compassionate, and evidence-based care to help individuals manage their symptoms and pursue a life of meaning and purpose.

Understanding Psychosis and Schizophrenia

The core of schizophrenia is psychosis, a condition where the mind has a break from reality. This manifests through various symptoms. Positive symptoms include experiences that are added, such as hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren’t there), delusions (strong, false beliefs), and disorganized thinking or speech. Negative symptoms represent a loss of normal function, including a flat affect (reduced emotional expression), avolition (severe lack of motivation), and social withdrawal.

Defining Schizoaffective Disorder

Schizoaffective Disorder is a distinct condition that bridges the gap between a psychotic disorder and a mood disorder. To be diagnosed, a person must experience the symptoms of schizophrenia (like hallucinations or delusions) while also having a major mood episode (either depression or mania) that is present for the majority of the illness’s duration. Crucially, they must also have a period of at least two weeks of psychosis without any mood symptoms present.

A Collaborative and Supportive Approach

Effective treatment requires a comprehensive, team-based approach. We focus on Coordinated Specialty Care (CSC), which integrates different forms of support. This includes individual therapy, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for psychosis (CBTp), to help manage distressing thoughts, as well as family education and support to create a strong recovery environment. We also emphasize life skills training to help clients improve their social and vocational functioning, promoting independence and community integration.

The Foundational Role of Medication Management

Medication is a cornerstone of treatment for managing psychosis and providing the stability needed to engage in therapy. Antipsychotic medications are essential for reducing or eliminating symptoms like hallucinations and delusions. For schizoaffective disorder, treatment also includes mood stabilizers or antidepressants to manage the manic or depressive episodes. Our medical team works collaboratively with each client to find the most effective medication with the fewest side effects, ensuring a personalized and closely monitored treatment plan.
